Who are we? An introduction to Traam.

Immigration procedures are a living nightmare; it's easier to peel a kiwi with boxing gloves. This was the problem we faced, on one hand, as immigrants, not knowing where or how to start, and on the other, as lawyers, witnessing the inefficiencies of the system. That’s why we decided to build Traam, and would like to share a bit about the team that is determined to create a solution for this problem in this blog post.

The origins of the project 🐣

Our project comes from problems we experienced firsthand. Our team consists of an immigrant, Andrés, and a lawyer, Helena. Helena, due to ties with the family business, started working as an immigration lawyer. In doing so, she began to realise the difficulties faced by foreigners in these administrative procedures, and the disproportionate impact they had on their lives. Andrés, for his part, came to study to Spain, and every year, like clockwork, had to renew his residence permit to continue his studies and eventually stay to work. In total, he went through 8 immigration processes, and although some were easier than others, in general, they were frustrating, overwhelming, and disheartening experiences. So, both, independently, came to the conclusion that there had to be a better way to manage all this mess.

Thus, Andrés began to develop the project under the idea of “managing your procedures more easily, online, without obstacles… something like what TaxDown has done for personal income tax, a tool that makes confusing and frustrating bureaucratic processes a simple and friendly experience.” At that time, he was working in the operations area of a fintech company alongside the product team, and began to develop the idea in the incubator and accelerator at Esade. Helena, on the other hand, was working in the family business managing real estate assets and began to have a lot of contact with foreign tenants, who started requesting immigration services. She saw it as an opportunity to earn some extra income, but upon entering the field, she realised it was very gray; an unrewarding job, where clients were lost, and lawyers gave little priority to cases due to low pay versus the high complexity of the cases. She thought that there should be a platform to handle all this, but lacking knowledge of product and digital service development, she left the idea on standby until further notice.

Later, due to fortuitous events of life, the two met at a bachelorette party. Upon meeting, they talked about the work Andrés was doing in the incubator and accelerator and what Helena had experienced as an immigration lawyer. Just at that moment, Andrés found himself stuck in the progress of the project due to a lack of technical knowledge on the matter and was looking for someone to build Traam with. Thus, they decided to go for a coffee to see if their visions were compatible, and well… you’re reading this blog now, so you must have realised how the conversation went.

We have a clear philosophy: to make life easier for immigrants with their legal procedures using technology and digitalisation as levers. Immigration procedures take a lot of time, money, and frustration. We want these bureaucratic processes simpler and more tailored to the needs and realities of today through digital innovation.
