Family Reunification

During the period of the two months before or three months after the expiry date of the Foreigner Identification Card (TIE), the foreign national holding a temporary residence authorisation for family reunification may apply for its renewal, which gives them the right to continue residing in Spain.

♾️ Possibility of obtaining a national long-term residence authorisation

If, when renewing the residence authorisation for family reunification, the sponsor already holds or has applied for the national long-term residence or EU long-term residence authorisation, their family members may also apply for it.

In that case, they must apply for a long-term residence authorisation, and not the renewal of the family reunification authorisation.

🔀 Change of sponsor

To renew the authorisation, the family sponsor must continue to meet the financial means, accommodation and medical insurance requirements that enabled them to obtain the initial residence authorisation for their family.

If they no longer meet these requirements, another person may take their place as sponsor:

1. The initial sponsor's spouse or partner may replace them (provided that they live in Spain and are part of the same family unit), when renewal is requested for descendants (children), wards or ascendants (parents).

2. The other parent or guardian of the reunified family member may replace the initial sponsor (when they live in Spain, regardless of whether or not they are part of the same family unit), when the renewal process is requested for the descendants (children) or wards.
