Work
If you hold a long-term stay authorisation for studies and want to start working in Spain, as a general rule you will need to obtain a work authorisation, unless you meet certain exceptions.
If you have a long-term stay authorisation obtained for higher education, it will not be necessary to carry out this additional procedure to request a work authorisation, as the authorisation itself already automatically enables you to work, without the need for additional procedures, both as a self-employed and employed worker, provided that this activity is compatible with your studies.
⚠️ For all other types of studies, you will indeed need to apply for a work authorisation.
With a stay authorisation for studies, no additional permit is required to undertake work placements (internships). Provided that the placements are linked to your curriculum and within the validity of your current authorisation, the stay authorisation for studies automatically covers the following two cases:
Curricular academic placements: It will not be necessary to request an additional authorisation to undertake curricular placements, by means of a collaboration agreement and forming part of the curriculum. This point will also apply if you hold a long-term stay authorisation to participate in a student mobility programme.
Vocational training (FP) placements: If your authorisation is for post-compulsory secondary education, it will automatically authorise you to carry out training activities in a company or equivalent organisation if they are conducted within the framework of vocational training (general or intensive regime in intermediate and higher vocational training cycles, as well as training leading to professional certificates).
⚠️ To work, whether as an employee or self-employed, in any other activity that is not framed within the curriculum, you must apply for a work authorisation.
Requirements
🎓 Hold student status and be the holder of a long-term study stay authorisation or a student visa.
🕒 Work activity may not exceed 30 hours per week.
⚠️ Vocational training under the intensive scheme shall be governed by the provisions of the sector-specific legislation.
📍 Work activity is geographically limited to an autonomous community, specifically, to the same one where the long-term stay authorisation was granted.
⚠️ Work activities may be carried out in other Autonomous Communities, provided that these are bordering regions or when the work modality is hybrid (for example, teleworking) and allows compatibility.
💼 Employed Work
Comply with the requirements to carry out employed work, regulated in art. 74 of Regulation 1155/2024, with the exception of letters a, c and h. This translates into the following requirements:
An employment contract, signed by both parties, must be presented.
The contract conditions must comply with the current regulations and the applicable collective agreement for the same activity, professional category and town. Part-time hiring is permitted with remuneration proportional to the Minimum Interprofessional Wage in relation to the hours worked.
The employer must be up to date with the fulfilment of tax and Social Security obligations.
The employer must have sufficient economic means for their business project and to meet the obligations assumed in the contract with the worker.
The worker must have the training and, where applicable, the professional qualification legally required to practise the profession.
Not to be, if applicable, within the period of commitment not to return to Spain that the foreign national assumed when voluntarily returning to their country of origin.
🚀 Self-Employed Work
Comply with the requirements to carry out self-employed work, regulated in art. 84 of Regulation 1155/2024, with the exception of letters d) and e). This translates into the following requirements:
Comply with the requirements that current legislation demands of nationals for the opening and operation of the planned activity.
Possess the legally required professional qualification or sufficient accredited experience in the exercise of the professional activity, and when required, as well as, where appropriate, professional association registration when so required.
Accredit the sufficiency of the investment planned for the implementation of the project and its impact, if applicable, on job creation (including self-employment).
General Documents

💼 Employed Work
Signed employment contract, signed by both parties, the employer and the student.
Documentation of training, professional qualifications and, where applicable, recognition of the qualification, in the case of regulated professions in Spain.
Documents proving the financial standing of the employer.
Personal identification documents of the company.
Where applicable, a copy of the articles of association or the powers of attorney granting the company representative the authority to hire the employee.
🚀 Self-Employed Work
Responsible declaration or prior notification or authorisations or licences, depending on the activity to be carried out.
Training, professional qualification and, where applicable, recognition of the qualification, in the case of regulated professions in Spain.
Documentation of investment and job creation or self-employment.
⚠️ The last two requirements can be accredited by means of a report issued by one of the following organisations:
National Federation of Associations of Entrepreneurs and Self-Employed Workers (ATA).
Union of Professionals and Self-Employed Workers (UPTA).
Intersectoral Confederation of Self-Employed of the Spanish State (CIAE).
Organisation of Professionals and Self-Employed (OPA).
Union of Associations of Self-Employed Workers and Entrepreneurs (UATAE).
