Extension
The extension of the study stay authorisation is aimed at all foreign nationals who wish to continue their academic training in Spain and need to extend the validity of their current permit.
This procedure is key to ensuring the continuity of the study programme once the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) is close to expiry. The application must be submitted within 2 months prior to the expiry date of the TIE, or during the 3 months subsequent to it.
Regarding extension limits, the following conditions must be taken into account according to the type of programme:
One extension:
Voluntary service.
Training activities, such as:
Language assistant.
Spanish or co-official language studies.
Preparatory courses for selective tests for specialised healthcare training.
Technical aptitude certification or professional qualification.
Grade C professional certificates (levels 2 and 3).
Two extensions:
Higher education.
Post-compulsory secondary education.
Requirements
💶 Sufficient financial means to cover the expenses of the stay and return to their country for the student and, where applicable, for their family members.
🩺 Have medical health insurance arranged with an insurance entity authorised to operate in Spain.
⚖️ Have no criminal record in Spain and in the countries where they have resided in the last five years, for offences recognised under Spanish law.
⚠️ Only if the stay is longer than 6 months and they are of legal age (+18).
General Documents
📄 Application Form EX-00.
💰Payment of Fee Form 790 Code 052 Section 1.1.2.
🪪 Valid passport or travel document, recognised as valid in Spain, with a minimum validity of one year.
💶 Documentation proving sufficient financial means for the duration of the stay in Spain.
🩺 Medical health insurance, public or private, contracted with an insurance company or entity authorised to operate in Spain.
⚠️ If working in Spain, and registered with the Social Security system, you can submit a copy of said registration or the employment history report to prove insurance.
👮🏼♂️ Criminal record certificate issued by the authorities of the country or countries in which you have resided during the last five years prior to submitting the application.
⚠️ Only if the stay is longer than 6 months and you are of legal age (+18).
⚠️ It is not necessary to re-submit the criminal record certificate to extend an initial authorisation that was granted for more than six months.
Specific Documents
Depending on the type of studies being pursued, different documentation will be required.
🏛️ Higher Education or Post-Compulsory Secondary Education
Accreditation of performance and continuity by providing the certificate of having passed the previous academic year along with the admission for the following period.
Proof of payment consisting of the receipt of payment for tuition.
📝 Training Activities
Proof of admission through the document confirming acceptance to undertake the training activity.
Proof of payment consisting of the receipt of payment for registration or tuition fees.
Language Studies of Spanish or Co-Official Languages in Spain
In addition to the previous requirements relating to training activities, the following documentation will be required:
Certificate of achievement confirming that the student has passed the course in which they were enrolled, in the case of Official Language Schools (EOI).
One of these options must be met:
Hold the diploma or be registered for the DELE exam.
Hold the diploma of the SIELE exam.
Selective Exams for Access to Specialised Medical Training Spots
In addition to the previous requirements relating to training activities, the following documentation will be required:
Proof of participation by means of accrediting documentation of having sat the selective access exams.

Continuity agreement through an annex to the previous contract or a new volunteering agreement demonstrating that the service continues to be provided under the same conditions.
