Initial Request
This authorisation is aimed at all individuals who will be studying in Spain for a period exceeding 90 days.
The application for the study stay authorisation can be requested from:
Spain, if you hold a valid residence authorisation or as a tourist, in certain cases.
Abroad, at the Spanish consulate in your country of origin or residence.
Eligible studies for application:
Higher education
Post-compulsory secondary education studies
Training activities
Language assistants
Spanish language studies or co-official languages in Spain
Preparatory courses for selective tests to access specialised health training positions
Training courses leading to the attainment of the technical aptitude certification, professional qualification, or grade C professional certificates (levels 2 and 3)
Mobility programme for compulsory or post-compulsory secondary education students
Volunteer service
Professional health training
Student mobility within the EU
⚠️ Applications for a study stay authorisation from Spain as a tourist can only be made for the following types of studies:
Higher education
Technical aptitude certification or professional qualification (sub-category of training activity)
Professional health training
Student mobility within the EU
Requirements
🌎 Not be a citizen of the European Union, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Switzerland, or a family member of citizens of these countries.
🛂 Not be irregularly in Spanish territory, or in the case of applying for authorisation from Spain, you must be in a regular situation (as a tourist or as a resident depending on the type of study).
🚫 Not be listed as inadmissible in Spain or the Schengen area.
🚓 Not pose a threat to public order, safety or public health.
🌡️ Not suffer from any of the diseases that may have serious public health implications, in accordance with the provisions of the 2005 International Health Regulations.
⚠️ This must be proven only if applying from outside Spain.
🧑🏽 Be of legal age (+18 years old).
⚠️ To apply for higher education studies from a consulate, you can be 17 years old.
⚠️ For school student mobility programmes or volunteering, no minimum age is required.
🗓️ Apply for the authorisation at least two months prior to the date on which the studies start, except where impossible due to enrolment dates or for exceptional reasons.
⚠️ Volunteering is not subject to this deadline.
💶 Sufficient financial means to cover the expenses of the stay and return to their country.
⚠️ In the case of volunteering, this requirement does not apply.
🩺 Have medical health insurance arranged with an insurance entity authorised to operate in Spain.
⚖️ Have no criminal record in Spain and in the countries where they have resided in the last five years, for offences recognised under Spanish law.
⚠️ Only if the stay exceeds 6 months and you are of legal age (+18).

🪪 Valid passport or travel document, recognised as valid in Spain, with a minimum validity of one year.
💶 Documentation proving sufficient financial means for the duration of the stay in Spain.
🩺 Medical health insurance arranged with an insurance company authorised to operate in Spain.
📋 Medical certificate proving that you do not suffer from any serious diseases in accordance with the International Health Regulations of 2005.
⚠️ This must only be proven if applying from outside Spain.
👮🏼♂️ Criminal record certificate issued by the authorities of the country or countries in which you have resided during the last five years prior to submitting the application.
⚠️ Only if the stay is longer than 6 months and you are of legal age (18+).
⚠️ This document will not be necessary when you already hold a stay authorisation (longer than 6 months) or a residence authorisation.

Depending on the type of study to be undertaken, different documentation will be requested.
🏛️ Higher Education or Post-Compulsory Secondary Education Studies
Letter of admission or equivalent document, as proof of having been admitted by the higher education or post-compulsory education institution or centre to study the programme.
Enrolment or equivalent document, as proof of having paid the cost of the studies.
📝 Training Activities
Letter of admission or equivalent document, as proof of having been admitted to carry out the training activities.
Enrolment or equivalent document, as proof of having paid the cost of the studies.
In the case of preparatory courses for selective tests to access specialised health training (residency) spots: a Spanish or foreign degree, duly recognised or homologated, of Bachelor or Graduate in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, psychology or other university degrees that allow preparation for the aforementioned courses.
🧳 Student Mobility Programme
Document certifying having been admitted as a participant in a student mobility programme in order to follow a compulsory or post-compulsory secondary education programme.
Document certifying having been admitted to an educational centre registered in the State Register of non-university teacher centres to carry out compulsory or post-compulsory secondary education studies.
Document certifying that the responsible organisation and/or the natural person takes charge of the student during their stay.
Authorisation signed by both parents.
Documentation certifying the minor's family link.
Documentation certifying having accommodation, during their stay, with a family selected by the organisation responsible for the mobility programme, or in a boarding school or residence assigned to or connected with the aforementioned educational programme organisation.
🤲🏽 Volunteering
Agreement signed with the entity in charge of the volunteering programme.
💡 The volunteering entity must be legally constituted and registered in the competent registry in accordance with current regulations.
Parental or guardian authorisation.
⚠️ Only in the case of minors.
🏥 Residency for the Training of Specialists in Health Sciences
Spanish or foreign degree, duly recognised or homologated, of Bachelor or Graduate in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, psychology or others university degrees through which they have obtained specialised health training (residency) spots.
Accreditation of having been awarded a spot in the specialisation studies.
🇪🇺 Mobility of Students Within the EU
Higher education students holding an authorisation issued in another Member State without EU intra-mobility measures who wish to study in Spain.
Having been admitted to carry out or extend studies in another Member State of the European Union, in this case, in Spain.
Having been admitted by a recognised institution or a higher education centre in Spain.
Having paid the registration fees, enrolment fees or equivalent document required by the corresponding institution or educational centre.
