Family Members
Students applying for a study stay authorisation in Spain can bring or reunite their family members with them in Spain. This procedure can be carried out simultaneously with the main application or subsequently, provided that the authorisation has at least 90 calendar days of validity remaining. It is important to remember that the student's family members will not have authorisation to work in Spain.
Family members are understood to be:
Spouse, registered partner or stable partner of the student.
Minor children of the student or their spouse, registered partner or stable partner, who are unmarried or have not formed their own family unit.
Adult children of the student or their spouse, registered partner or stable partner, who are unmarried or have not formed their own family unit, and who have specific and personalised support needs due to their disability or illness.
A person supporting the student if they have a disability or an illness requiring this type of support.
Provided that the holder of the study stay authorisation is undertaking:
Higher education, whether university-level or not.
Special employment relationship of residency for the training of specialists in Health Sciences.
In both cases, family members may apply for the authorisation from Spain or from abroad.
Requirements
Of the Student
🎓 Be applying for or must have been granted a student visa or a long-term stay authorisation for higher education or to carry out a special residence relationship (spot) for the training of specialists in Health Sciences.
💶 Sufficient financial means to cover the costs of the stay and return to their country, both for themselves and for their family members.
Of the Student's Family Member
🌍 Not be a citizen of the UE, EEA or Switzerland, or a family member of citizens of these countries.
🛂 Not be in an irregular situation in Spanish territory, or in the case of applying for the authorisation from Spain, you must be in a regular situation (as a tourist or as a resident depending on the type of study).
🚫 Not be listed as inadmissible in Spain or the Schengen area.
🚓 Not pose a threat to public order, safety or public health.
🩺 Have medical health insurance arranged with an insurance entity authorised to operate in Spain.
General Documents
📄 Application Form EX-00.
💰 Payment of Fee Form 790 Code 052.
🪪 Valid passport or travel document of the student, and, if applicable, the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) of the student.
🪪 Valid passport or travel document of the family member, recognised as valid in Spain, with a minimum validity of one year.
👨👩👧👦 Copy of the supporting documentation of the family ties or relationship and, if applicable, of legal and financial dependency.
💶 Supporting documentation of sufficient financial means for the duration of the stay in Spain.
🩺 Medical health insurance for the family member arranged with an insurance company authorised to operate in Spain.
📋 Medical certificate proving that you do not suffer from any serious diseases in accordance with the International Health Regulations of 2005.
⚠️ This must only be proven if applying from outside of Spain.
👮🏼♂️ Criminal record certificate issued by the authorities of the country or countries in which you have resided during the last five years prior to submitting the application.
⚠️ Only if the stay is longer than 6 months and you are of legal age (18+).
